KEARSLEY, a township in the parish of DEAN, hundred of SALFORD, county palatine of LANCASTER, 5 miles (S. E.) from Great Bolton, containing 1833 inhabitants. High Style school was erected by Henry Mather about 1752, and endowed with land for the edu- cation of orphans and other poor children of the towns or hamlets of Kearsley, Bqlton le Moors, and Tonge with Haulgh; the annual income is £249. 15. 11., and fifteen boys are boarded, clothed, and educated. The poor inhabitants of this township, and of the precinct of the chapelry of Ringley, have the privilege of sending their children for free instruction to Ringley school, founded by Nathaniel Walworth. Here are establishments for making vitriol and for spinning and bleaching yarn, besides numerous coal pits.
