KETTON, a parish in EAST hundred, county of RUTLAND, 4 miles (S.W. by W.) from Stamford, containing 797 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, with the curacy of Tixover, rated in ticking's books at £8, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of the Prebendary of Ketton in the Cathedral Church of Lincoln. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is principally in the early style of English architecture, but at the west end is an intermixture of Norman; the date of the south porch is 1232. Here is a place of worship for Independents. In 1791, Sophia Eliz. Edwards gave £ 1000 three per cents, for the support of a school of industry.
