KILMERSDON, a parish in the hundred of KILMERSDON, county of SOMERSET, 6 miles (N. W. byW.) from Frome, comprising the hamlets of Charlton, Coleford, Kilmersdon, Kilmersdon-Common, Luckington, and Lypeat, and containing 1991 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, with the perpetual curacies of Ashwick and Coleford annexed, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £6. 18. 6., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church, dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, is extremely light and elegant, and has a lofty tower. A new church is in progress of erection at Coleford. There are two places of worship for Methodists and one for Presbyterians. The Rev. Thomas Shute, in 1719, gave a rentcharge of £20 towards the support of a school for forty children, to which Mrs. Mary Freeman, in 1760, bequeathed £100, to be placed at interest for repairs and for the purchase of books.
