KIRKBY-upon-BAIN, a parish in the southern division of the wapentake of GARTREE, parts of LINDSEY, county of LINCOLN, 6 miles (S. S. W.) from Horncastle, containing, with the township of Tumby, 591 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the manor court of Kirkstead, rated in the king's books at £13. 13. 6., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. A school for the instruction of poor children is endowed with land bequeathed by Richard Brocklesby, in 1713.
