LAUNDE, a liberty (extra-parochial), in the eastern division of the hundred of GOSCOTE, county of LEICESTER, 6 miles (W.N.W.) from Uppingham, containing 36 inhabitants. A priory was founded here, in the reign of Henry I., by Richard Basset, and Maud his wife, for Black canons of the order of St. Augustine, the revenue of which, at the dissolution, was valued at £510. 16. 5.: the chapel and burial-ground are still preserved.
