LAVANT, a parish comprising East and West Lavant, in the hundred of ALDWICK, though locally in that of Box and Stockbridge, rape of CHICHESTER, county of SUSSEX, 2 miles (N.) from Chicliester, and containing 364 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury, for the deanery of Pagham, the court for which is held in the parish of All Saints, Chichester; it is rated in the king's books at £20. 18. l., and in the patronage of Lord Willoughby de Broke. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. This parish has the privilege of sending four children to the charity school, founded by the Countess of Derby, at Boxgrove.
