LEA, a parish in the wapentake of CORRINGHAM, parts of LINDSEY, county of LINCOLN, 2 miles (S.S. E.) from Gainsborough, containing 199 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Stow, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £9. 4. 2., and in the patronage of the Rev. Sir C. J. Anderson, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Helen. Here are some fish ponds and a moat, the remains of an ancient religious house. Gypsum is found under the marl in this parish. A Cistercian nunnery was founded, in 1180, at Hevening, in this parish, by Reyner Evermue; it was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and at the dissolution had a revenue of £58. 13. 4.
