LEAK, a parish comprising the townships of Borrowby, Crosby, Knayton with Brawith, Landmoth with Catto and Leak, in the wapentake of ALLERTONSHIRE, the chapelry of Nether-Silton, and the township of Gueldable, in the wapentake of BIRDFORTH, North riding of the county of YORK, and containing 1083 inhabitants, of which number, 11 are in the township of Leak, 6 miles (N.) from Thirsk. The living is a vicarage, in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of the Bishop of Durham, rated in the king's books at £16. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a small sum for the instruction of poor children. Leak was once a large town, but was destroyed about the time of the Conquest: the church and a farm-house alone remain in the township.
