LESBURY, a parish comprising the townships of Alemouth, and Lesbury with Hawkhill, in the southern division of BAMBROUGH ward, and the townships of Bilton and Wooden, in the eastern division of COQUETDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, and containing 982 inhabitants, of which number, 576 are in the joint township of Lesbury with Hawkhill, 4 miles (E. by S.) from Alnwick. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Northumberland, and diocese of Durham, rated in the king's books at £8. 2. 10., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The river Alne is here crossed by a bridge, and discharges itself into the North sea at Alnmouth, where a great quantity of grain is shipped for London, and other markets. A schoolroom and a house for the master have been given by the Duke of Northumberland, Mr. Henry Strother having, in 1718, bequeathed a piece of land, now producing about £ 10. 10. a year, for teaching poor children.
