LEW (NORTH), a parish in the hundred of BLACK TORRINGTON, county of DEVON, 4 miles (S.W. by S.) from Hatherleigh, containing 868 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconryl of Totness, and diocese of Exeter,"rated in the king's books at £27. 8. 9., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St. Thomas a Becket. At Redcliffe, within this parish, are the remains of an ancient chapel, and near it a quarry of excellent freestone.
