LINDFIELD, a parish in the hundred of BURLEYARCHES, or BURARCHES, rape of PEVENSEY, county of SUSSEX, 3 miles (E. byN.) from Cuckfield, containing 1410 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The church, which is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is in the decorated and later styles of English architecture. There is a place of worship for Independents. A school of industry was founded, by William Allen, Esq., of London, for the instruction of children of both sexes in the art of agriculture, and various trades; the building is of clay covered with cement, so as to give it the appearance of stone. Fairs are held on April 1st and May 12th, for sheep and cattle, and on the 5th of August for lambs. The river Ouse is navigable for barges to this place.
