LINFORD (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of NEWPORT, county of BUCKINGHAM, 1 mile (W. S.W.) from Newport-Pagnell, containing 408 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £20. 0. 2. Lord Bagot and others were patrons in 1786. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew j the porch of the north door has a groined roof, with foliage in the centre. In 1702, Sir William Pritchard bequeathed a rent-charge of £24 in support of an almshouse for six poor persons, likewise another of £10 for the instruction of children. Lady Pritchard subsequently bequeathed a sum of money for apprenticing poor boys, and clothing the inmates of the almshouse. Dr. Richard Sandy, otherwise Napier, presented to this rectory in 1589, was held in superstitious reverence for his skill in the sciences of physic and astrology, and is said to have died in the posture of prayer, at a very advanced age.
