MARTON, a chapelry in the parish of PRESTBURY, hundred of MACCLESFIELD, county palatine of CHESTER, 3 miles (N. by W.) from Congleton, containing 341 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chester, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £400 royal bounty. D. Davenport, Esq. was patron in 1806. The chapel is a rude building of wood, with a chancel and spire of more modern date; it had formerly a chantry, which is said to have been founded in the reign of Edward III., by Sir J. Davenport and his son, of whom there are in the cemetery two recumbent figures in armour.
