MARTON, a chapelry in the parish of POTTLTON, hundred of AMOUNDERNESS, county palatine of LANCASTER, 5 miles (W. N. W.) from Kirkham, containing 1397 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £800 private benefaction, £400 royal bounty, and £2200 parliamentary grant. J..Clifton, Esq. and others were patrons in 1814. A free school was founded in 1717, by James Baines, who endowed it with a messuage and lands producing £91 a year: a master and an assistant are elected annually, and the average number of scholars is about one hundred. There is also a Sunday school, attended by about eighty children, towards the support of which Margaret Whittarn left an annuity of 40s.
