MARTON, a parish, joint with Grafton, partly within the liberty of ST-PETER-of-YORK, but chiefly in the upper division of the wapentake of CLARO, West riding of the county of YORK, 3 miles (S.) from Aldboroxigh, containing 464 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, with Grafton, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, rated in the king's books at £2. 19. 4., endowed with £200 private benefaction and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of St. John's College, Cambridge. Various small sums, from a bequest by Nicholas Stowell, in 1597, and other subsequent donations, are applied to the instruction of poor children.
