MATHERN, a parish in the upper division of, the hundred of CALDICOTT, county of MONMOUTH, 8 miles (S. S. W.) from Chepstow, containing 374 inha-, bitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, with that of Caerwent, in the archdeaconry, and diocese of Llandaff, rated in the king's books at £6. 3. 6., and in the patronage of the Chapter of Llandaff. The church is dedicated to St. Theodorick. Charles Pratt, in 1724, bequeathed land, directing the income to be applied ifl teaching poor children to read. A house, called Monks Court, is supposed to have been formerly a monastery.
