MATTERDALE, a chapelry in the parish of GREYSTOCK, LEATH ward, county of CUMBERLAND, 10 miles (E. by S.) from Keswick, containing 290 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £600 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Rector of Greystock. The cHapel was erected in 1685. Robert Grisdale, in 1722, built a school-house, and endowed it with about £ 12.12. a year towards the education of poor children.
