MAWGAN-in-PYDER, a parish in the hundred of PYDER, county of CORNWALL, 4 miles (N. W. by W.) from St. Columb-Major, containing 580 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Cornwall, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £26. 13. 4. The Rev, Philip Carlyon was patron in 1806. The church is an ancient fabric, containing some curious monumental brasses of the Arundels, and a richly- carved screen, separating the nave from the chancel. In the churchyard is a fine old sculptured cross with a niche, representing in high relief the Crucifixion, with other figures, probably taken from some ancient legend, and bearing the inscription Cnegumijtl Enans, in characters of the ninth century. Lanherne house, long the principal residence of the Lords Arundel, was fitted up by his late lordship as an asylum for a convent of Carmelite nuns, who emigrated from Antwerp, and by whom it is still occupied: it contains a neat chapel, adorned with a few good paintings brought over by the nuns. The parish is bounded on the west by the Bristol channel, and has a small harbour, called Mawgan Forth.
