MAXEY, a parish in the liberty of PETERBOROUGH, county of NORTHAMPTON, 1 mile (S. S. W.) from Market-Deeping, containing, with the hamlet of Deeping - Gate, 544 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Northampton, and diocese of Peterborough, rated in the king's books at £ 10, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Peterborough. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is principally Norman, with portions in the decorated and later English styles. In this parish are Lolham bridges, which are of great antiquity, having been constructed by the Romans, to conduct the Ermin-street over the low grounds adjoining the river Welland.
