MELTON, a parish in the hundred of WILFORD, county of SUFFOLK, 2 miles (N.E.) from Woodbridge, containing 607 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £9. 6. 8., and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Ely. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew. What was formerly the House of Industry for the hundred of Wilford is in this parish; it has been converted into a county lunatic asylum. There are a large iron-foundry and an extensive building establishment in the parish. The river Deben is navigable on the south-east, where it is crossed by Wilford bridge.
