MISSENDEN (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of AYLESBURY, county of BUCKINGHAM, 26 miles (S. E. by S.) from Buckingham, containing 1735 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Lincoln. William Astle, Esq. and others were patrons in 1820. The church is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. There is a place of worship for Baptists. A free school on the British system was established here on the 1st of January, 1827, by Mr. John Hull, and is attended bv about one hundred and fifty pupils. An abbey for Black canons, in honour of the Virgin Mary, was founded here in 1133, by Sir William de Missenden, the revenue of which, at the dissolution, was £285. 15. 9. J0}in Randall, an eminent divine in the reign of James I.3 was born here.
