MITCHELMERSH, a parish in the hundred of BUDDLESGATE, Fawley division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, comprising the hamlets of Awbridge, Brushfield, and Mitchelmersh, and containing 908 inhabitants, of which number, 374 are in the hamlet of Mitchelmersh, 3 miles (N.) from Romsey. The living is a rectory, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Incumbent, rated in the Icing's books at £26. 12. 85., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Winchester. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The Andover canal runs through the parish. A Sunday school is endowed with about £8. 10. per annum, arising from some small bequests. Mitchel- mersh is within the jurisdiction of the Cheyney Court held at Winchester every Thursday, for the recovery of debts to any amount.
