NAWORTH, a township in the parish of BRAMPTON, ESKDALE ward, county of CUMBERLAND, 2 miles (N. E. by E.) from Brampton, containing 377 inhabitants. Within this township is Naworth castle, anciently the head of the great barony of Gilsland. It is situated in a fine park, overlooking the river Irthing, which bounds it on the north, and is a spacious quadrangular structure, with two lofty towers. The hall is a noble room, containing paintings of some of the kings of Scotland; in another apartment is a full-length likeness of Mary I. j and in the chapel, a profusion of ancient armour, with portraits of the Patriarchs and some of the Kings of Israel, &c.
