NEWBOTTLE, a township in the parish of HOUGHTON le SPRING, northern division of EASINGTON ward, county palatine of DURHAM, 8 miles (N. E. by N.) from Durham, containing 2306 inhabitants, who are principally employed in the various collieries and potteries in the vicinity. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. Fifty-seven individuals lost their lives by an explosion in one of the coal mines in 1815.
