NEWDIGATE, a parish comprising the hamlet of Newdigate, in the first division of the hundred of REIGATE, but chiefly in the second division of the hundred of COPTHORNE, county of SURREY, 5 miles (S.S.E.) from Dorking, containing 579 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Surrey, and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £8. 18. 4., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, is principally in the early style of English architecture. George Steer, in 1661, gave a school-house, and endowed it with a rent-charge of £6.13. 4. a year, to which George Booth, in 1681, added £100; the present annual income amounts to upwards of £20, and is applied to the education of about eighteen poor children.
