NEWTON (SOUTH), a parish in the hundred of BRANCH-and-DOLE, county of WILTS, 2 miles (N.byW.) from Wilton, containing, with the chapelries of Chilhampton and Ugford, and the tythings of Burdens-Ball, Stoford, and Wishford, 579 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £12. 18. 4., and in the patronage of the Earl of Pembroke. The church, dedicated to St. Andrew, has lately received an addition of fifty-four sittings, of which forty-eight are free, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £50 towards defraying the expense.
