NEWTON (WEST), a township in that part of the
parish of BROOMFIELD which is in ALLERDALE ward
below Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 9 miles (N;)
from Cockermouth, containing 309 inhabitants. Here
are the remains of a tower, which formed part of an
ancient castle or hall. In the neighbourhood is a
quarry of red freestone.
