NORTHIAM, a parish in the hundred of STAPLE, rape of HASTINGS, county of SUSSEX, 7 miles (N. W. by W.) from Rye, containing 1358 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Lewes, and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £15. 10. 2., and in the patronage of Miss Lord. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is partly in the early English and partly in the decorated style. The river Rother bounds the parish on the north, and separates it from the county of Kent. Robert Iden, in 1614, conveyed a house and certain land upon which a schoolhouse was subsequently erected, at an expense of £700, defrayed by Frewin Turner; the annual income, including the proceeds of £500 left, in 1723, by George Bainsley, is applied to the education of poor children.
