ORMSIDE, a parish in EAST ward, county of WESTMORLAND, 3 miles (S. E. by S.) from Appleby, containing 202 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, rated in the king's books at £ 17. 17. 3., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Carlisle. The church, dedicated to St. James, is a small ancient structure, situated on a commanding eminence. In the bed of the river Eden, which runs through the parish, several brazen vessels were discovered, in 1689, which probably were placed there during the parliamentary war.
