ORSETT, a parish in the hundred of BARSTABLE, county of ESSEX, 18 miles (S. S. W.) from Chelmsford, containing 1130 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the jurisdiction of the Commissary of Essex and Herts, concurrently with the Consistorial Court of the Bishop of London, rated in the king's books at £29. 6. 8., and in the patronage of the Bishop. The church is dedicated to St. Giles and All Saints. There is an endowed school for educating and clothing fourteen boys, founded by Edward Anson, Esq. Orsett Hall, the [manor-house, was erected upwards of three hundred and fifty years ago. In the neighbourhood are vestiges of ancient intrenchments, enclosing four or five acres.
