PEMBERTON, a chapelry in that part of the parish of WIGAN which is in the hundred of WEST-DERBY, county palatine of LANCASTER, 2 miles (W. S. W.) from Wigan, containing 3679 inhabitants, who are chiefly employed in the coal mines, which are worked here to a considerable extent. The parliamentary commissioners for building new churches and chapels have given directions for the erection of a new chapel at this place. In the neighbourhood is Hawkley Hall, a very ancient building, the original proprietors of which came over with the Conqueror.
