PLAYPEN, a parish in the hundred of GOLDSPUR, rape of HASTINGS, county of SUSSEX, half of a mile (N.) from Rye, containing 317 inhabitants. The living is a dfscharged rectory, annexed to that of East Guildford, in the archdeaconry of Lewes, and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £ 12. Thomas P. Lamb, Esq. was patron in 1807. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is in the early style of English architecture. The river Rother and the Royal Military canal pass through the parish. Foundations of old buildings are frequently met with, denoting the population to have been formerly greater than it is now. Here was also an hospital, founded in honour of St. Bartholomew, and placed under the government of the abbey of Westminster.
