PORTSCUETT, a parish hi the upper division of the hundred of CALDICOTT, county of MONMOUTH, 5 miles (S. W. by S.) from Chepstow, containing 168 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory with that of St. Pierre, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Llandaff, rated in the king's .books at £7 2. 1., and in the patronage of Charles Lewis, Esq. Near the bank of the Severn are vestiges of a Roman camp, part of which has been swept away by the river. The ancient road from this station to the great camp at Caerwent passes through the parish. From Black Rock there is a ferry over the Severn, called the New Passage, connecting the great road from London into South Wales.
