PUTTENHAM, a parish in the hundred of DACORUM, county of HERTFORD, 3 miles (N. W.) from Tring, containing 112 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Huntingdon, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £10. 1. Of., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Lincoln. The church is dedicated to St. Mary: the tower is built of flint and stone in square compartments, and the ceiling of the nave, which is of carved oak, is supported by figures representing some of the Apostles; there are on the cross' beams other figures habited as ecclesiastics.
