QUARLEY, a parish in the hundred of ANDOVER, Andover division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 7 miles (W. byS.) from Andover, containing 213 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in.the archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £15. 12. 1., and in the patronage of the Master and Brethren of St. Katherine's Hospital, London. The church is dedicated to St. Michael. The Rev. Thomas Sheppard, D.D., and Richard Cox, Esq., in 1802, endowed a free school for poor children -j the income is about £ 16 a year; the school-house was erected by Mrs. Sheppard. On the summit of Quarley Mount, five miles north-west from Danebury Hill, is a considerable ancient camp with quadruple intrenchments still visible, on the south side; those on the east have been nearly obliterated by the plough; various tumuli are scattered over the adjacent downs.
