RIBBY, a chapelry in the parish of KIRKHAM, hundred of AMOUNDERNESS, county palatine of LANCASTER, IU mile (W. by N.) from Kirkham, containing, withWrea, 500 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £600 private benefaction, £800 royal bounty, and £300 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Vicar of Kirkham. The chapel was consecrated in 1775. James Thistleton, in 1693, bequeathed £180 towards the establishment of a free school, to which Nicholas Sharpies, in 1716, left the residue of his estate, amounting to £850; these bequests now produce an annual income of about £220, which is applied for the support of a school of forty boys, another of forty girls, erected in 1818, and for clothing the children of both once a year.
