ROOTHING (ABBOT'S), a parish partly in the hundred of DUNMOW, but chiefly in that of ONGAR, county of ESSEX, 5 miles (N.by E.) from Chipping-Ongar, containing, with the hamlet of Barwick, 236 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Middlesex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £ 14. 10., and in the patronage'of the Rev. Thomas Dyer. The church is dedicated to St. Edmund.
