ROUGHAM, a parish in the hundred of THEDWESTRY, county of SUFFOLK, 4 miles (E. S. E.) from Bury- St. Edmunds, containing 778 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £23. 18. 6. Philip Bennett, Esq. was patron in 1815. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. Edward Sparke, in 1720, bequeathed land now producing about £40 a year, to be applied in support of a school for eight children of Rougham, and four of Thurston; and Thomas Sparke, in 1721, gave a rent-charge of £4 for a similar purpose. There are several other bequests, the principal of which is that of Roger Kerrington, in 1702, for apprenticing poor children, with a premium of £30 each.
