SALWARPE, a parish in the upper division of the hundred of HALFSHIRE, county of WORCESTER, 2 miles (W. S. W.) from Droitwich, containing 462 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester, rated in the king's books at £14. 14. 7. The Rev. J.V.Vashon was patron in 1808. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, exhibits portions in the Norman, and in the decorated and later styles of English architecture. The Droitwich canal passes through the parish. Thomas Trimmell bequeathed £24 per annum for teaching poor children, and. repairing the church; but the charity commissioners report it as lost. A small Benedictine priory, a cell to the abbey of Fontevrault, was founded here in the reign of Richard II., the site of which is occupied by an old mansion erected in the time of Henry VIII. Richard Beauchamp, the celebrated Earl of Warwick, was born here, in 1351.
