SAMPFORD (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of FRESHWELL, county of ESSEX, 3 miles (N.E. byN.) from Thaxted, containing 756 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Hempstead, in the jurisdiction of the Commissary of Essex and Herts, concurrently with the Consistorial Court of the Bishop of London, rated in the king's books at £18. E. Hervey, Esq. was patron in 1801. The church is dedicated to St. Michael. There is a place of worship for Baptists.
