SANDERSTEAD, a parish in the first division of the hundred of WALLINGTON, county of SURREY, 3 miles (S. S. B.) from Croydon, containing 189 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Surrey, and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £7, and in the patronage of the Rev. A. W. Wigsell. The church is dedicated to All Saints. Parley, in this parish, is memorable as having been the residence of the late John Home Tooke, and the place where he wrote his work on English grammar, fancifully entitled " The Diversions of Purley."
