SAWLEY, a chapelry in that part of the parish of RIPON which is in the liberty of RIPON, West riding of the county of YORK, 5 miles (S. W. by W.) from Ripon, containing 490 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Archbishop of York, endowed with £400 private benefaction, £400 royal bounty, and £300 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Ripon. The chapel is dedicated to St. Michael. The Wesleyan Methodists have a place of worship here. Six poor children are taught for the interest arising from £100, the gift of Ralph Lowther, in 1770.
