SCOTBY, a township in that part of the parish of WETHERAL which is in CUMBERLAND ward, county of CUMBERLAND, 3 miles (E. by S.) from Carlisle, containing 318 inhabitants. There is a meeting-house, with a burial-ground, for the Society of Friends. A rail-road from Carlisle to Newcastle passes through the township. A school is endowed with land, now producing & 14 a year, for teaching poor children, who pay each a small quarterage.
