SEMLEY, a parish forming a detached portion of the hundred of CHALK, county of WILTS, 4 miles (S. by W.) from Hindon, containing 675 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at & 17- 2. 8., and in the patronage of the Dean and Canons of Christ Church, Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. Leonard. There is a place of worship for Baptists. Dr. William Thorn, a celebrated divine and Hebrew scholar, was born here, towards the close of the sixteenth century.
