SEND, a parish in the second division of the hundred of WOKING, county of SURREY, 3 miles (S.W. by W.) from Eipley, containing, with the chapelry of Ripley, 1283 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Surrey, and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £8. 18. 1., and in the patronage of Earl Onslow. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is principally in the early style of English architecture. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. A church and priory of Black canons, in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Thomas a Becket, was founded, in the time of Richard L, at Newark, in this parish, by Ruald de Calva, and Beatrix, his wife, which at the dissolution possessed a revenue of £294. 18. 4. The Wey and Arun canal passes through the parish.
