SHERBORNE (MONKS'), a parish partly in the hundred of BASINGSTOKE, Basingstoke division, but chiefly in the hundred of CHUTELY, Kingsclere division, of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 3 miles (N. W. by N.) from Basingstoke, containing, with the tything of Chineham, 494 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £8. 0. 7., and in the patronage of the Provost and Fellows of Queen's College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to All Saints. Here was a Benedictine priory, dedicated to St. Mary and St. John, a cell to the abbey of Cerasy in Normandy, which, at its suppression, was given by Henry VI. to Eton College, but it was finally granted by Edward IV. to the hospital of St. Julian in Southampton, and is enjoyed by the Provost and Fellows of Queen's College, as masters of that hospital.
