SHILBOTTLE, a parish in the eastern division lof COQUETDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, comprising the townships of Guyson, Hazon, Newton on the Moor, Shilbottle, Whittle, and Woodhouse, and containing 1153 inhabitants, of which number, 548 are in the township of Shilbottle, 4 miles (S. by E.) from Alnwick. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Northumberland, and diocese of Durham, rated in the king's books at £4. 14. 8., and in the partonage of the Crown. The church, dedicated to St. James, was thoroughly repaired about 1793. Coal of a superior quality is obtained here. Henry Strother, in 1741, founded and endowed a school for teaching poor children, the income of which was augmented by Francis Strother, in 1765 and 1770.
