SHOREHAM, a parish in the hundred of CODSHEATH,
lathe of SUTTON at HONE, county of KENT,
4 miles (N.) from Seven-Oaks, containing 891 inhabitants.
The living, a discharged vicarage, is one of the
three which constitute the deanery of the Arches, in the
peculiar jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury,
rated in the king's books at £14. 6. 8., and in the
patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster.
The rectory of Shoreham, with the curacy of Otford,
is rated in the king's books at £34. 9. g., and is
an impropriation belonging to the Dean and Chapter
of Westminster, a certain stipend being allowed to
the curate. The church, dedicated to St. Peter and St.
Paul, is an ancient structure, containing several elegant
monuments. The river Darenth runs through the
parish in its course to Dartford. Castle farm was
built with the remains, and upon the site, of Shoreham
castle. An old mansion-house, built by Inigo Jones,
and formerly belonging to the D'Aranda family, is fast
going to decay.
