SHORWELL, a parish in the liberty of WEST-MEDINA, Isle of Wight division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 5 miles (S.W. by S.) from Newport, containing 576 inhabitants. The living comprises a sinecure rectory, rated in the king's books at £20. 0. 2., and a discharged vicarage, to which is united the rectory of Mottiston, rated at £17. 16. 0., endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester, and both in the patronage of Lady St. John Mildmay. The church is dedicated to St. Peter.
