SKINBURNESS, a village in the parish of HOLMECULTRAM, ALLERDALE ward below Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 11 miles (N. W. by W.) from Wigton. The population is returned with Low Holme. This place had anciently a market and a fair, granted to the abbot of Holme-Cultram; it was of considerable importance as a depdt from which the army employed against the Scots was supplied with stores. About 1303, the town was washed away by an irruption of the sea, and the abbot, in consequence having obtained license to erect a church, or chapel, at Arlosh, a new town was also built, and called Newton-Arlosh. Skinburness is now a pleasant village and respectable sea-bathing place, affording public and private accommodation to its numerous visitors, and commanding a most extensive view over the Solway Frith, and of the Scottish mountains beyond. A very productive herring fishery is carried on here.
